SuperStar Aquarius based in Sabah port

Star Cruises is the first cruise line to homeport one of its ships in Kota Kinabalu City

The 2,156-passenger SuperStar Aquarius cruise liner arrived Kota Kinabalu on 6 November 2013 following a voyage from Taiwan.
From the city, it offers a series of three-night voyages to destinations in Borneo, including Bintulu, and Brunei’s capital Bandar Seri Begawan. The deployment will run until 30 March 2014.

The first international cruise line to homeport in Kota Kinabalu attracting not only domestic but also international guests to Sabah.
This deployment helps build the cruise tourism industry in this part of Asia and boost local tourism economies.

The SuperStar Aquarius features a range of facilities including :
1) nine restaurants and bars.
2) a spa.
3) a 409m² duty-free shopping area.

The ship was previously based in Keelung, Taiwan, and departed on its repositioning voyage to Kota Kinabalu on 29 October 2013, with stops at Hong Kong, Manila and Boracay.
 

Challenges
• The land provision by the state government for the relocation of the general cargo operation to a new cargo port. Current proposal is adjacent to Sepanggar Bay Container Port
• The funding for the cost of building a new cargo port
• The approval for 42 acres land application designated for KKICT at existing Kota Kinabalu Port area
Enablers Required to make it happen
• Sabah Ports Authority to acquire land adjacent to SBCP in order for Suria Group to invest in infrastructure of New General Cargo Port and Dedicated International Cruise Terminal
Key outcome / benefit of this project
• To have a dedicated International Cruise Terminal to attract more international cruise arrivals for Sabah.
