古晉福晉堂會友歡送胡熙德先生回港記念.17-7-1955

香蕉路晉福堂創立於1954年，是古晉第一間衛理公會的堂會.胡熙德是教育部的華校視學官.回港後是香港中文大學教務主任.

On 17 July 1955, during the British Colonial era in Sarawak, the members of the Kuching Fuzhentang (福晉堂) gathered in front of their wooden colonial-style hall to bid farewell to Mr. Hu Xide (胡熙德) as he prepared to return to Hong Kong. 

Eighty men, women, and children, carefully arranged in rows with the younger children seated at the front, elders and community leaders in the middle, and younger members standing behind. 

The group is framed by the hall’s raised timber structure with shuttered windows and a steep tiled roof, typical of colonial architecture in Kuching at the time. Faces of children can also be seen peering curiously from the open windows above, adding warmth to the formal gathering. The image reflects not only the respect and affection held for Mr. Hu, but also the unity and vitality of Kuching’s Chinese community in the mid-1950s.
