OUM’s Master of English Studies (MES) is a unique interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary program that combines studies in language and cultural production such as literary and filmic texts to promote a more focused and holistic understanding of English as an intellectual discipline.

Keeping true to the expansive spirit of English, MES engages with and draws from such fields as film studies, visual culture, area studies, philosophy, and political theory to provide learners with opportunities to acquire a wide range of advanced subject knowledge, subject-specific skills, and generic and transferable skills.

The MES curriculum features such exciting courses as Visual Culture, Cultural Studies, Film and Society in Contemporary Southeast Asia, Philosophy of Literature, Critical Theory, and World Literature.

The objectives of MES are to:

- advance learners’ knowledge, skills, understanding and appreciation of English as an evolving and versatile discipline

- engage learners imaginatively in the advanced process of reading, analysing and/or producing complex and sophisticated texts and discourses

- offer learners knowledge and appreciation of contextual approaches to the production and reception of texts and discourses across fields

- problematise the acts of reading and writing so that learners can reflect critically upon textual production and reception across time and space and in their own practice

- develop a range of subject-specific and transferable skills, including high-order conceptual, analytic, and communication skills

- provide an intellectually stimulating and satisfying learning experience within the distinctive framework of English

- provide a basis for further study in English or related disciplines at all levels.

MES graduates with English skills will be of immense value in graduate employment in such fields as teaching, journalism, professional and creative writing, management, research, editorial, advertising, media, public relations, academia, theatre, and consultancy.
