Under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) Sabah now has better educational and skills training facilities with more Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM) and Giat Mara Centers being set up.

Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM)
Federal government increased the allocation for MARA from RM2.74 billion in 8MP to RM3.6 billion in the 9MP as MARA organization plays an important role in developing human capital.

Under the new 9MP, two MRSM schools, each costing about RM45 million, were constructed in Tawau and Sandakan.

In 2006 there are 32 operational MRSM in Malaysia. Plan to build eight new MRSM under the 9MP.

Out of the eight forthcoming MRSM schools, two will be put up in Sabah particularly in Tawau and Sandakan. When both are completed, there will be three MRSM Mara Junior Science Colleges in Sabah.

Giat Mara centers
Also plan to build 30 new Giat Mara centers in Malaysia to produce more skillful youths to augment Malaysia's workforce.

There are 176 Giat Mara centers in Malaysia that offer 32 vocational courses for dropout youths and those who did not excel in their national exams.

To ensure more local youths enjoy the same opportunity, the department planning to open up two more such centers in Sandakan and Kalabakan of Tawau.

Sabah has the highest number of Giat Mara centers with 21 in operation compared to other states.

2008 Giatmara Malaysia has spent about RM4 million in conducting hardcore poverty eradication programmes in Sabah.

Giatmara Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Co-operation, has been allocated RM8 million from the Economic Planning Unit and another RM5 million from FELDA to assist the government in beating hardcore poverty in the state.

The company has carried out numerous programmes to train the poor to become skillful workers and entrepreneurs and to become financially independent.

People from poor background are eligible to enter the programmes. Upon completing the course, trainees would be able to get a job and send money to help their family to slowly eliminate poverty. Sabah has the highest rate of poverty in Malaysia

Giatmara Malaysia would appoint a service provider to conduct courses and train participants of the programme.
Kharsani Welder Technology & Services Sdn Bhd is one such service provider which has run five courses in ‘Basic Introduction Course in Welding Career’ in Sabah.

GAITMARA provide facilities to the trainees while the service provider must have a shop as a requirement. At least 60 percent of the trainees will be employed by the service provider or they would help them find work in other companies.
