The MARA Junior Science College ('Maktab Rendah Sains Mara -MRSM') is an institution created by the People's Trust Council (Majlis Amanah Rakyat - MARA), a Malaysian government agency.

The purpose of the institution is to help provide better learning facilities for bright Bumiputera students in local schools throughout Malaysia.

MARA Junior Science College - MJSC benefit bright students especially from the rural areas in Malaysia. This is mainly because most rural schools in Malaysia do not have enough learning facilities and infrastructures to help their successful and bright students to reach their full potential.

Admission to Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Tawau

Every year, students with distinction in their local public exams are encouraged to apply for the admission into MRSM.

Students enrolling into MRSMs will have to undergo the MRSM Entrance Tendency Test (Ujian Kecenderungan Kemasukan MRSM -UKKM). These tests are made harder than how their actual exams are made, in order to screen the best students possible for admission.

Academic system of MRSM

Students are primarily assessed through a system which is similar to the grading systems in universities and colleges, the Grade Point Average (GPA) (Purata Nilaian Gred - PNG) system. By the end of their final semesters they will be awarded a certificate of graduation for those who succeeded to pass with at least a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) (Timbunan Purata Nilaian Gred - TPNG) of 2.00 and above.

Applicants would still have to take both the Lower Secondary Assessment (Malay: Penilaian Menengah Rendah) and the Malaysian Education Certificate (Malay: Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) national examinations.

MJSC's use the usual academic ladders in Malaysia when it comes to the level progression system, where students advance through year 7 (known as Form 1 in Malaysia) to Year 11 (Form 5) by age. In Malaysia to date, there is no system that allows for level transition according to the student's capability yet. Most MJSC runs all levels from Form 1 to Form 5, but there are several that only runs Form 4 and Form 5. There are also several that only runs Form 1 to Form 3.

For those students who started from Form 1, they can continue their studies in MJSC until form 5 either in the same college or by transferring to another college. These students can only continue their studies in MJSC if they pass their Penilaian Menengah Rendah with at least 6As, with As in both Mathematics and Science. Failure to achieve this will cause their studies in the MJSC system to be discontinued, and they will have to continue their studies in ordinary school.

MRSM PKP (Special Education Programme, or Malay: 'Program Khas Pendidikan')
PKP is a title that is given to MARA Junior Science Colleges that have attained a distinctively high level of quality in their students through national exams and participation in events - with the former being the primary factor. These colleges are often deemed the most superior in their category of schools in Malaysia, though others could still compete with them. Most of the students that are admitted into MRSM PKP are usually those who obtain 8As or more in the Malay: Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination, and pass the UKKM with flying colors. The quality of the students in MRSM PKP are usually higher, particularly in their ability and capability for learning when compared with those in the other MJSCs. As such, these MJSCs usually become the role models for the other MJSCs in order to promote healthy competition between its students.

Currently, there are five of them in total:

MJSC Taiping, Perak
MJSC Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan
MJSC Tun Ghafar Baba, Melaka
