Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) was formerly known as
KolejUniversiti Teknikal Kebangsaan Malaysia (KUTKM) and was established on
1December 2000. After the re-branding of KUTKM it is now known as UTeM
commencing 1 February 2007.
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) was formerly known as Kolej
Universiti Teknikal Kebangsaan Malaysia (KUTKM) and was established on 1
December 2000. It was formed under Section 20 of the University and University
College Act 1971 (Act 30) under the Orders of Kolej Universiti Teknikal
Kebangsaan Malaysia Incorporated) 2001, UTeM is the 14+h public university
(IPTA) in Malaysia, It is a pioneer in the use of the" Practice and Application
Oriented" teaching and learning method for technical education in Malaysia. This
is in accordance with the government's decision to cater for the human resource
needs of Malaysia's industries.
The university currently operates from two out of its three campuses, the Main
Campus in Durian Tunggal and the industrial Campus in Ayer Keroh, Melaka. The
766-acre main campus is expected to be completed by 2010. Currently the
Electrical Engineering Faculty, and the Electronics and Computer Engineering
Faculty are in full operation in its main campus, The third campus, the City
Campus will open in June and is located in the heart of Melaka City
UTeM has five faculties namely. Electrical Engineering, Electronic and Computer
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Information
and Communication Technologies, There are two academic centers, that is, being
the Human Development and Language Centre (PBPI) and the University-Industry
Centre (UNIC), The Institute for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship was
also established to offer post-graduate programmes on technology management,
entrepreneurship and MBA programmes. The Graduate Study Centre was also
established in order to coordinate the postgraduate study in UTeM
The university offers academic programmes at diploma, bachelor, master and PhD
levels. The university aims to produce professionals who are not only highly
qualified and technically competent butane also highly skillful and efficient.
> Academic Strengths
The academic programmes offered by the university are conducted in a way
where equal emphasis is given to the theoretical and practical aspects of the
discipline. The teaching and learning approaches at the university are practice
and application oriented and involves

UTeM admitted its first batch of 348 students on 10June 2001 and by April 2007,
it had a total enrolment of 5099 students.
> Teaching & Learning
UTeM provides various sophisticated facilities such as Lecture Halls,
well-equipped laboratories such as Robotic & Automation Lab, Instrumentation
Lab, Thermodynamics &Technology Lab, Multimedia Lab, Smart Lab, Language and
Chemistry Lab, The Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) which is a teaching
factory, will be in operation at the end of the year.
> Accommodation
UTeM provides on-campus accommodation to about 3,600 of its students in
three residential colleges. All residential colleges have complete facilities,
Information on private residences available for rent is also available from
newspapers and notice boards, Nearly all accommodation around UTeM e.g. Taman
Tasik Utama and Taman Bukit Beruang, have three bedrooms and an attached
bathroom. Monthly rental for such accommodation ranges from RM 250 to RM 800.
> Knowledge Infrastructure
UTeM provides a complete library filled with academic sources that
students need. It operates everyday from 8.00am to 11.00pmon weekdays and from
8.00am to 4,30pmduring weekends, The library is also open during the semester
break on weekdays only from 8.00am to 4.30pm,
> Medical Care
All students are eligible for medical service at the students' clinic
which operates from 8.15a.m. to 4.30p.m. daily. Health services are also
available at appointed panel clinics within close proximity of the campuses.
> Food
There are a variety of cafes and restaurants nearby which operate from
8.00am to 6.00pm.
> Transportation
The university provides 16 buses for the use of its students and staff.
These buses ferry students between hostels and campuses. Getting around Melaka
by bus is easy and relatively cheap, Public transportation such as taxis and
buses (Salira) operate from Melaka town (Melaka Central in Jalan Tun Razak) to
UTeM.
Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN) comprised :
1- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)
2- Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP)
3- Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM)
4- Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)
These four universities under the MTUN umbrella offered various technical and
vocational courses at the diploma and first degree levels.
The three Premier Polytechnics :
1- Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO)
2- Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA)
3- Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PiS)
The entry qualification of these three Polytechnics is equivalent to that for
Public Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA).

Activities
A student's life is not complete without activities and the opportunity
to have fun with friends, Activities can aid students in building their mental
and physical strength as well as social interaction skills. Students are
encouraged to participate in:

recreation &outdoor activities,
• Religious activities coordinated by the Religious Unit of Student Affairs

• Various accredited culture-based programmes coordinated by the Cultural Unit
of Student Affairs Office,
Career & Counseling Centre
Students may obtain guidance and information on further studies and
career opportunities from the Counseling Unit at the Student Affairs Office,
Students may attend various workshops which are organized by the Student Affairs
Office such Resume Writing, Mock-Interviews and Career Talk.
Students may seek counseling service and guidance on personal or academic
problems, The service is available daily from 8.00a.m. to 4,00p.m.For an

Scholarships / Financial Aid Scholarships
Students that meet the requirements set for the scholarships can apply
from the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Public Service Department and the State
Foundation in every state. Generally the requirements are as below:
• Malaysian citizen <?
• Applicants must be under the age of 36
• Applications are only applicable for listed courses
• A credit in English (SPM) or Band 3 and above (MUET)
• A CGPA of at least 2.75 (Matriculation Studies) and 3.0 (Polytechnic)
• Interested and have the potential to become educators
• Excellent health
Education Loans
Students may apply for Perbadanan Tabung Penclidikan Tinggi Nasioncil
(PTPTN) using the application form provided by the Student Affairs Office, Every
application should be sent through the Student Affairs Office. Applications,
which are sent personally will not be entertained by PTPTN. Generally the
requirements are as below:
• Malaysian citizen
• SPM or its equivalent
• Obtained a pass in the 'mean test which is conducted to evaluate applicants'
family financial strength
• Currently not under any sponsorship
• Full time first-degree or diploma in Public or Private Institutions of Higher
Learning (IPTA and IPTS). Applications from students of private higher
institutions of learning will only be considered if they are pursuing courses
that are certified by the Private Education Department.
The loan rate will be based on parents' / guardians' monthly income compared to
the current PTPTN budget.
Current loan rate according to parents' / guardians' monthly income:
RM 4,001 and above (fee rate)
RM 2,001 - RM 4.000 (half rate)
RM 2,000 and below (full rate)
Industrial Placement
University Industry Centre (UNIC) is responsible for the coordination for
the Industrial Placement Programmes for all Academic Faculties in UTeM.
Industrial placement is a compulsory component for all degree and diploma
programmes at UTeM. The experience and skills acquired during the placement
period can be invaluable and advantageous to our students when applying for
employment after graduation.
Objectives
• To acquaint students with a real-life working environment
• To provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge learnt
• To provide opportunities for students to learn new skills and be aware of
current technologies
• To instill the right work attitude and professionalism
• To establish strong relationships with industries• To provide opportunities
for organizations to assess students as prospective employees
• To allow organizations to consider offering projects as students' final year
projects
Duration Bachelor Programmes - 20 weeks
Diploma Programmes --10 weeks
Industrial Visits
The objective of industrial visits is to ensure that the work undertaken by a
student is appropriate and that the student is making an effective contribution
towards the organization,
The visit is conducted twice for degree programmes (once at the beginning and
another towards the end of the attachment) and once for diploma programmes,
The University will inform the company in writing prior to the visit, The
company should inform the students and make arrangements for discussions between
the visiting lecturer (s) with the students and the industrial supervisors
during the visit,
Research & Development (R&D)
One of the functions of UNIC is to manage all research and development R&D
activities at UTeM. UTeM focuses on application research that is
industrial-based. The centre coordinates all grant applications to the Ministry
of Sciences, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Ministry of Higher
Education under the following schemes:
(A) Intensification of research in priority area (IRPA)
(B) Industry Grant Scheme (IGS)
(C) Multi Media Super Corridor Grant Scheme (MGS)
(D) Demonstrator Application Grant Scheme (DAGS),
(E) Fundamental Research Grant
