Before the 1900’s, The Japanese were in Tawau venturing into agriculture, timber
and fishing business.

By the 1930’s, Kuhara (Nissan) and Kubota (Mitsubishi) were two largest
commercial establishment in Tawau.
The two road named after these two plantation still exist in Tawau until today.
1 - Jalan Kuhara – Named after Kuhara Fusanosuke, the owner of Kuhara Mining
Co., later called Nissan.
2 - Jalan Kubota - Named
after Kubota Umeme, the owner of Kubota Estate,
There are also Secondary School and Primary School named after both of them.
Both Kuhara Road and Kuhara Estate were named after Fusanosuke Kuhara who was the Minister of Communications of Japan and the founder of Hitachi and Nissan, which are today multinational firms.
The earliest two crops planted by the Japanese in Tawau were
1- Abaca (Manila Hemp) on Table Estate and
2- Rubber on Kuhara Rubber Estate (now Imam Estate).
Both Merotai town and Tiger Estates in Tawau were from new jungle clearing by the Japanese in the 1900s.
Another Japanese plantation known as "
Kubota Estate belonged to Kubota Umeme, specializes in coconut planting operated in 1916.

Tawau Town Centre is divided into five Commercial Areas : Sabindo, Fajar and
Tawau Lama (Old Tawau), Ba Chung Commercial Centre and Takada. But tourist to
Tawau will only move around 3 commercial areas : Sabindo, Fajar and Tawau Lama
Sabindo Area
Federal House, where most government offices such as the Immigration
Department and the National Registration Department are located is found in
Sabindo area.
Fajar Area
Fajar is the Golden Triangle of Tawau, the commercial area, where major
banks such as HSBC and MAYBANK, PUBLIC BANK, CIMB, BANK ISLAM are located. The
Tawau District Court is also situated here. Definitely our Malaysia Airlines
Office is situated here too.
Tawau Lama or Old Tawau
Tawau Lama is the original part of Tawau, which contains Tawau's central
market and Tawau Port.

Sin Onn Road in Tawau has been upgraded by 2010. This 4 km Road has not been
upgraded in any way for the past 30 years despite the drastic increase in
population due to numerous housing estates being set up there.
The population of Tawau was estimated at 345,000, comprises mainly Bugis and
Chinese with about 12% of the population, 8% Bajau, 5% Malay, and with
significant minorities of Kadazan and Murut. However, there is also a very large
non-registered illegal immigrant population from Philippines and Indonesia as
well.
Tawau is a remote town in Malaysia located at the northern tip of Sabah. The
gateway to the world class diving paradise Sipadan Island and many nearby island
resort. Many visitors take Tawau as a transit point. The Tawau airport connects
Tawau with Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur and other Malaysian destinations. Scuba
divers fly into Tawau and are normally whisked off to Semporna and to the
islands of Mabul and Sipadan.
Few tips that you need to know. Where to stay?
Tawau as a small town has more than 10 hotels ranging from 4 star hotels to
budget hotels. The rates are ranging from MYR50 to MYR200. Most of the hotels
are found in Fajar area and centre around the old town. There are also plenty of
shop lot 'hotels' in Tawau at a rate as low as RM30.00 but these rooms are for
those foreign laborers who are on transit in Tawau to an from Indonesia and
Philippines. Most of this hotels are within walking distance to central market,
restaurants, supermarkets, Commercial & Government offices and etc.
Tawau district comprise of Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kunak, and Semporna town.
From the airport take a bus (RM10.00) or airport taxi (RM40.00) from the
airport. You can rent a car at the airport, and depart from there. Along the way
from the airport to the town, you can breathe in fresh air, as there is only
agricultural land with oil palm planted along the highway. You can also see our
local people selling their own hand cultivation on some fruits like pisang,
watermelon, honeydew, and also some wild mushrooms, durians, wild vegetables
etc... It is very cheap and fresh too.
Where to go when you are in Town?
There is not a great deal to see or do in Tawau town, but since you are here, it
is worth to browse some of the uniqueness of Tawau, a land full of peoples with
love and the kampong style hospitality which will be the most memorable one for
you if you happen to visit us...
Let me bring you to some of the places that you really enjoy visiting and
bargaining… Then, you may visit the most popular places for bargaining ---- the
Tawau’s Central Market where it is located in Tawau lama (Old town) which is the
original part of Tawau. In here, you can get fresh vegetables, dairy products,
dried seafood, fruits (hey, you can find terap here), clothing’s etc... MUST
BARGAIN... one more item, you must buy is - Amplang - a deep-fried fish paste
which is coated in corn flour.
Tawau is one of the best places in Malaysia to eat seafood.
Seafood in Tawau is extremely cheap, you must try seafood prepare in
Chinese/Malays cooking style at the food stalls by the sea side of sabindo area.

No visit to Tawau is complete without sampling the culinary delights of its
night hawker food stalls.
Seafood stalls at the Sabindo hawker centre is located beside the waterfront of
Tawau town centre. The stalls open at night only, selling all sorts of seafood
here. Try “Makanan Laut 101” or more popular would be Kam Ling Seafood – (Open
every day from 4pm – 11pm).
The stalls offer very competitive prices for fresh sea foods of the day. Bayar
credit card – pun boleh at some of the stalls……
Tawau Local Cuisine
"Nasi Kuning" or yellow rice is an Indonesian specialty that cannot be found
anywhere else in Malaysia except Tawau.
The rice is cooked with coconut milk and turmeric (known as kunyit in Malay),
hence the name nasi kuning (yellow rice). It is usually served with more variety
of side dishes. It is usually served with a piece of fish deep-fried in dried
chili sauce. This can be found in almost any Malay restaurants or stalls around
Tawau but sometimes also sold in some Chinese coffee shops. To further enhance
the taste, the rice is usually wrapped in banana leaves.
Price ranges from RM 2.50 to RM 4.50 per serving.

Hiking in Tawau?
LIM MAN KUI Quarry, Tawau is the best spot for you to view the whole town of
Tawau.
After your heavy seafood breakfast, lunch, and dinner...time for you to get
rid the cholesterol……join us in the hill hiking... Strap on those hiking shoes
and get ready to explore the most popular hiking track in Tawau. Situated 8 km
from the city centre, Lim Man Kui Quarry Hill is a popular spot for avid
trekkers and Hash runners who love the challenge of varied terrain...
The hike begins with an easy trail of concrete road which eventually ‘disappear'
and make way for rocky ground. The uphill walk is fairly challenging,
particularly for beginners. Watch out for rocks. Some parts get steeper and more
demanding, but the beautiful natural surroundings make it all worthwhile.
Along the way there is so much to marvel at, such as South China Sea at the
distance and the vast Oil Palm Plantation.

friends here...
SUNDAY MARKET...
Most local Malaysian who comes to Tawau never misses the opportunity to buy
salted fish to bring back... The price is cheap and more variety to select from.
Here in this Sunday market you can find dried squid, shark fin, salted fish, and
many more...
This interesting street market is held each Sunday morning at the corner of
Jalan Apas and Jalan Kuhara.
See the local indigenous community selling their produce such as vegetables,
fruits, sea products and handicrafts together with other stuffs that you get
from mobile traders. This is when a mix of races – Bajau, Kadazan/Dusun,
Indonisian, Chinese, and Malay – come to sell their goods and socialize. An
astonishing array of produce from forest vegetables, wild orchids, dried shark
fins, tropical fruit and edible seaweed.
All about Cocoa
Visit the Tawau largest cocoa producer in Malaysia – Teck Guan Cocoa Village,
Teck Guan Cocoa Museum (the only Cocoa Museum in Asia ...), Waterfalls, which is
about 30 minutes drive from Tawau Airport.
The magnificent waterfall (the Cocoa Culture Spring) at the village is an ideal
local for a picnic. Nature lovers will feel very much at home at the Cocoa
Culture Spring which is surrounded by lush greenery. The village has two main
waterfalls and four mini cascades.
Before visiting to the Cocoa Village many visitors think cocoa is produced from
coffee beans and is surprised to see the cocoa tree and fruit. Even Malaysians
do not know this and a visit to the village is an educational trip for many.
Here, the estate also prides itself on being a developer of large-scale teakwood
and arenga pinnata (sugar palm) plantation. Also found here are an abundance of
fruits such as the dragon fruit and abiu. Also, planted is the Misai Kuching.
The chalets are built with river stones and local timber, giving it a rustic
feel. Also, built was the swimming pool or you may jump into the nature river
i.e. The Balung river. You may also have the activity at the freshwater fishing
at the man-made pond. Other activates such us mountain biking, bird watching or
hiking around the resort. A place that you will never forget because the
freshness and the sweet singing sound of the early morning birds makes your life
longer. My family outing a year ago really has strengthened our relationship and
it is really a place of quite time. A time to enjoy God’s creation. Unless you
try, you will never experience it...
