Banking services at Terminal 2 before 2016

Forex and ATMs
A Maybank currency exchange counter and ATM was located near the departure security check-point;
HSCBC had an exchange desk and ATM immediately right when passengers exit the arrivals area;
The ATMs accepts Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Cirrus, American Express and JCB cards;
Maybank ATMs were usually offline from midnight until anything up to 6am and the forex counter closes early;

Best rates are from non-bank currency exchanges in Centre Point, Wisma Merdeka and Suria Sabah.

There was, however, Wifi Internet access for those dining at KFC located on Level 1;

AirAsia was the sole airline operating from Terminal 2 before 2016
Photo above : AirAsia aircraft at Terminal 2 IN 2015

AirAsia was the sole airline operating from Terminal 2 before 2016. But effective 1 December 2015 AirAsia operations at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) moved to Terminal 1 .
All of AirAsia’s flights to and from BKI will take off and land in Terminal 1 from that date onwards.

AirAsia WAS the sole airline operating from Terminal 2.
Terminal 2 was converted into a cargo terminal in 2016 and all budget airlines were moved to the main Terminal 1. The other budget airline, Cebu Pacific, had moved its operations to the Main Terminal 1 on Jan 1, 2015.
AirAsia had been remained adamant about staying on at the KKIA Terminal 2 in Tanjung Aru despite complaints of cramped and inefficient facilities. The reason of AirAsia ignored several deadlines to move to Terminal 1 was that there will be an increase in passenger service fees after moving there.
Terminal 1 was upgrade, which cost RM1.7 billion, now KKIA T1 has the capacity to serve nine million passengers, a 350% increase compared with Terminal 2.
However the main Terminal 1 was under-utilised, having the capacity for nine million passengers, but having served 3.19 million out of 6.79 million passengers in 2014.

A total of 14 airlines currently operate out of KKIA Terminal 1 with 12 aerobridges to cater for both narrow and wide body aircraft, and equipped with 64 check-in counters for both domestic and international flights.

Check-in counter Airport has provided adequate check-in counters but it is all depends on the airlines whomanaged those counters accordingly. Certain check-in counters are not open during peak hours thus long queues and encountered congestion at that particular area

Curbside area
KKIA (T2) wasa single level roadway which comprise of departure and arrivalpassengers. Based on our observation, the movement of vehicles entering the terminalarea wason a one way traffic flow. Any scheduled arrival or departure times during peak periods would produce the most congestion on airport roadways. There wasan increasedof vehicles parked along the shoulders of the access roadways as the drivers waitbefore returning to the curbside.

Apron Area At Terminal 2, ramp service vehicles such as baggage trucks, catering trucks, ground power units, etc. have to move between tightly double parked aircrafts and passengers definitely elevates the risk of an accident occurred. At the same time, passengers having to board and de-board the aircrafts that are double parked also face a higher risk of being caught in an untoward accident. This current shortage of parking bay will form a huge hindrance in
Air Asia‟s future expansion plans as the growth of the fleet size will be dependent on the parking space available. The above constraint has resulted in very unhealthy and unsafe parking practices at the ramp/apron area

T2- Currently there is 7 parking bays for narrow bodies and 2 parking bay for turbo propeller aircraft.
